Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro Begins Construction of Senior Care Unit
08/18/2008

WINNSBORO, Texas – Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro (PHW) plans to invest more than $1 million to construct a 12-bed senior care unit at the hospital. Older adults with mental health conditions often experience difficulty functioning. To meet the needs of these patients, PHW began construction on the unit on Aug. 18.

The senior care unit will primarily serve patients age 65 and older from Winnsboro and the surrounding communities, PHW Chief Financial Officer Renae Thomas said. The unit will offer inpatient treatment for mental health conditions that are prevalent in older adults, including depression.

“There is a huge demand for the service in our market area,” Thomas said. “Only one other nearby facility offers senior care services, and that facility operates at full capacity with a waiting list, making it difficult for many of these patients to get the treatment they need close to home.”

The American Psychological Association estimates that 20 percent of older adults in the community and as many as 50 percent of those in nursing homes suffer from depression. Older adults account for 13 percent of the population, but represent 20 percent of suicide deaths in the United States, the American Psychological Association estimates. Depressed adults can experience difficulty in physical, mental and social functioning.

Construction is expected to be completed in late November and the unit is expected to begin accepting patients on Jan. 1. The 9,000-square-foot unit will be located in the west wing of the hospital.

Beginning Aug. 18, the hospital’s west wing is “off limits” to everyone except construction workers. Therefore, changes to the following patient areas were necessary: gastrointestinal lab operations were moved to the east wing of the hospital, the room that holds exercise equipment was changed to room 118, stress testing services were moved to room 119, and sleep studies will now be conducted in the surgery holding rooms.

Patients that need to verify the location of their services may stop by the front desk of the hospital or call 903-342-3960 before arriving.
