Harris Methodist Springwood Opens Outpatient Program Devoted to Treating Depression in Women|
BEDFORD, Texas – Harris Methodist Springwood Hospital is launching Texas’ first hospital-based intensive outpatient program designed to treat depression in women during childbearing and post-childbearing years.
The Springwood Program for Women is a comprehensive program tailored to meet the needs of women at various ages and stages of life. It includes treatment for women struggling with pregnancy complications, postpartum depression, loss of a child, infertility, and hormone-related conditions such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder, perimenopause and menopause.
Services are available at the Siratt Women’s Center at Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital and at Arlington Memorial Hospital.
Depression is one of the most common complications women experience during and after pregnancy, but it often goes undiagnosed and untreated because it is easily overshadowed by other aspects of childbearing and early motherhood, according to WomensHealth.gov.
“North Texas is all too familiar with the horrific headlines that can result when new mothers suffering from severe mental illness go undiagnosed and untreated,” said Ramona Osburn, MBA, director of Harris Methodist Springwood Hospital. “We hope to increase awareness of the mental health issues women face and therefore increase the number of women who are seeking and receiving treatment.”
Osburn emphasized that depression is not “one size fits all” when it comes to gender.
“Many of the struggles women face, such as infant loss, miscarriage, and postpartum depression, can only be understood by other women who have experienced the same thing,” she said.
Not only are women twice as likely to suffer from depression than men, but the causes, symptoms and treatment are often different, Osburn said. Women, for instance, are generally started on lower doses of antidepressants than men, so cognitive behavioral therapy is crucial in treating depression in women.
Counselors for the Springwood Program for Women will work with the patient, the patient’s family and the patient’s referral source, such as her physician or therapist, to reach individualized treatment goals.
The intensive program involves a time commitment of three hours a day and is designed to help women balance their treatment requirements with work, education and home-life schedules. Patients can be referred to the center by a physician, therapist, EAP counselor, or through self-referral. The program includes:
