Wellness for Life Program Honored for Improving Access to Care|
FORT WORTH, Texas — The Wellness for Life mobile health program at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth has earned national recognition for its unique approach to providing preventive cancer care. The program is among ten 2013 Innovator Award winners named by the Association of Community Cancer Centers, a national education and advocacy organization for cancer teams.
For almost two decades, the Wellness for Life mobile unit at Texas Health Fort Worth has brought health screening services to businesses, community events and residents in underserved communities in Tarrant County.
“Our patients come from all walks of life,” said Rosemary Galdiano, R.N., MPH, OCN, manager of the mobile health program. “They can be culturally isolated and uninsured. Some may have more than one job, so getting a screening on our mobile unit is convenient for them.”
The units are staffed by nurse practitioners, registered nurses and other health professionals. Medical oversight is provided by a board-certified physician on the Texas Health Fort Worth medical staff. Services include screenings for breast, prostate, skin and colon cancers, in addition to other screenings recommended by the American Cancer Society. Pelvic examinations, cardiovascular screenings and bone density tests are also performed.
“Since our mobile health units come to people we serve where they live and work, we remove a significant barrier to access for them,” said Sue Shields, MBA, R.N., NE-BC, director of cancer services. “We provide navigation and diagnostic services as part of our cancer program, so those who require further evaluation have ready and timely access to additional services.”
