Texas Health Denton to Open Dedicated Pediatric Unit|
DENTON, Texas — At Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton we care for everyone, big and small. Now, our youngest patients will be served by a dedicated pediatric unit. The 18-bed unit opens on Oct. 28 on the fourth floor of the main hospital.
Texas Health Denton has cared for children since it opened its doors in 1987, but for the first time, the hospital will offer patients and parents access to a unit exclusively focused on the medical needs of children. Pediatric hospitalists who are part of the Cook Children’s Physician Network have joined the medical staff at Texas Health Denton and will provide 24-hour care to the children of Denton and surrounding areas.
“Texas Health Denton’s commitment to serving our community is stronger than ever,” said Stan Morton, president of Texas Health Denton. “The hospital has been working closely with Cook Children’s pediatric physicians to help plan and design this high quality unit.”
Each private room in the secured unit is designed to offer a welcoming, child and family friendly atmosphere, and the hospital has added 12 nurses who specifically specialize in pediatrics. The floor’s design theme features bright, cheery colors and décor, and rooms include televisions and sleeping accommodations, so parents can stay comfortably around the clock with their child and fully participate in their care. A playroom, complete with games, toys, books and crafts, is also available for patients and siblings.
“The unit has been designed to be a welcoming place for children, with one of the most important features being separate treatment rooms,” said Debbie Bostic, R.N., chief nursing officer at Texas Health Denton. “Children will be treated away from their patient rooms, in a special treatment area, so their patient room remains a safe-haven for them, helping to reduce stress and anxiety about being in the hospital.”
“When a child is ill, there is nothing more important to parents than finding the best care possible,” said Dr. Erik Templeton, medical director of hospitalist outreach on the medical staff at Texas Health Denton and Cook Children’s Health System. “For the first time, families in Denton won’t have to travel long distances in order for their children to have the benefit of a dedicated pediatric unit staffed by pediatric nurses and pediatric hospitalists from Cook Children’s Health Care System, a familiar and trusted name across Dallas-Fort Worth.”
The pediatric unit complements the hospital’s existing maternal and neonatal services, which includes a 10-bed, Level III neonatal ICU and more than 1,800 births per year.
