Texas Health Burleson achieves Chest Pain Center Accreditation|
BURLESON, Texas — Texas Health Harris Methodist Outpatient Center Burleson has been named an accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers, a designation achieved by facilities with expertise in caring for heart attack patients.
Texas Health Burleson met strict national standards for rapid recognition and collaborative treatment of heart attacks. Criteria includes reducing “door to balloon” time — the crucial minutes between the patient’s arrival at the emergency room and the opening of his or her blocked artery — and closely monitoring patients with chest pain to help ensure they’re not sent home too quickly or needlessly admitted to the hospital.
“This accreditation is an important achievement for our facility and for Burleson area residents,” said Becky Tucker, administrator for Texas Health Burleson. “By becoming an Accredited Chest Pain Center, we have enhanced the quality of care for our cardiac patients and demonstrated our commitment to higher standards to improve the health of the communities we serve.”
Heart disease accounts for nearly one in three deaths in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association. That’s 2,150 people dying from cardiovascular disease each day — about one death every 40 seconds.
When a heart attack occurs, medical professionals across multiple disciplines snap into action starting with the first call for help to 911: Paramedics immediately administer life-saving therapies, and physicians and nurses in the emergency department begin preparing for the patient’s arrival. If the individual is suffering a type of heart attack called a STEMI (ST-elevated myocardial infarction), an advanced evaluation and transfer system can be used to transport them by air ambulance to the Texas Health Harris Methodist Heart Center in Fort Worth for immediate intervention in the cardiac catheterization lab.
“Every second counts when it comes to treating a heart attack,” said Dr. Heather Beard, medical director of the emergency department at Texas Health Burleson. “When patients are experiencing chest pain the closest emergency department is the best one to go to. Our STEMI protocol helps ensure that patients receive high-quality treatment and evaluation without having to drive to a larger facility.”
