HMHEB Honors Outstanding Physicians

BEDFORD, Texas – Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital honored two outstanding physicians on its medical staff at its annual medical staff dinner Dec. 11 at the Gaylord Texan Resort. Pediatrician Richard Magie, DO, received the 2004 Humanitarian Award and obstetrician/gynecologist Mark Messing, MD, was honored with the 2004 Medical Staff Award for Excellence.

Dr. Magie was recognized for his work with St. Timothy Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Bedford to organize mission teams and deliver much needed medical and surgical care to the people of Rio Bravo, Mexico. “What began as an annual event four years ago with only a few people and a very big vision has grown to include two trips each year to Rio Bravo,” said Chief of Staff Roy Turner, MD. “Dr. Magie’s efforts as a humanitarian and contributor to society transcend the ordinary.”

The most recent trip in March 2004 brought 27 volunteers and 286 boxes of medical equipment, medication, toiletries, toys and other supplies to provide health care to the Rio Bravo community. The medical team led 23 surgeries and treated 350 patients in its clinic while the construction team built a home for a local family.

The Medical Staff Award for Excellence is given each year by Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital’s Chief of Staff to a medical staff member who has worked to promote excellence by improving or enhancing patient care or the operations of the medical staff.

“There was a television program in the 1980s called ‘WKRP in Cincinatti’ in which one of the characters was jokingly referred to as a ‘hard worker, loyal husband and all around good guy,’” Dr. Turner said. “Dr. Messing certainly fits this description.”

A champion of open communication between members of the ob/gyn medical staff, a cheerleader in constant pursuit of excellence in patient care, and an advocate of lifetime learning, Dr. Messing joins 18 other physicians honored with this award since 1988.
