HMHEB’s Spanish for Nurses Program Helps Caregivers Learn Through Role Play|
BEDFORD, Texas – Finding yourself in the hospital can be intimidating. The plethora of jargon and complicated medical terminology combined with feeling ill can make understanding your diagnosis and treatment challenging. Imagine how much harder it would be if you didn't speak English. In order to better communicate with their Spanish-speaking patients, nurses at Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital are taking a special Spanish course, complete with role play using bilingual “language amigos.”
On Friday, November 3, the language amigos, native speakers from across the hospital, will help the class participants use what they've learned in a practical situation in a real hospital room. The amigos will pose as patients who speak only Spanish and the students will have to respond according to the patient care scenario provided to them.
The Spanish for Nurses class began at Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital in 2005, and the program has now spread to its sister hospitals in Texas Health Resources, the parent company of Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital. A new pilot weekend program to reach night and evening shift nurses will begin January 6, with classes every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for eight weeks. The current class was held every Friday for five weeks from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Nurses from Texas Health Resources, as well as other hospitals, are welcome to participate in the next session. For more information and to sign up, please call Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital's education department at 817-355-7870. Besides learning how to better communicate with Spanish-speaking patients, nurses can earn up to 36 Type 1 Continuing Nursing Education Contact Hours.
