HMFW Caregivers Receive Blessing|
FORT WORTH, Texas — The hands of physicians, nurses, employees and volunteers at Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital will be honored and blessed by hospital chaplains and volunteers from several departments during Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital’s annual Blessing of the Hands on Thursday, January 29.
To acknowledge the sacred role physicians, nurses, hospital employees and volunteers play in caring for patients and the community, members of Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital's Pastoral Care Department will move throughout the hospital during each of the five shifts on Thursday to anoint the hands of caregivers and employees with oil and pray a special blessing over their work.
“Whether they do direct patient care or work in support services, we acknowledge that the work of our employees in caring for the health of the communities we serve is sacred, appreciated and important,” said Corina Rodriguez, Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital chaplain. “Our employees have an opportunity to touch so many lives everyday, whether they be a nurse providing medical care or a housekeeper making sure a patient’s environment is clean and comfortable. Their hands do important work that makes a difference in people’s lives and we want to bless and thank them for it.”
With the Blessing Cart in tow, chaplains will stop on each unit and in each department of the hospital giving every employee the opportunity to be blessed for their work. Using a pitcher of water and a large bowl, employees’ hands will receive a symbolic cleansing after which a small drop of oil will be poured into each hand as the chaplain reads a special blessing.
This is the fourth annual Blessing of the Hands event at Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital. About half of the hospital’s approximately 4,000 employees participate in the blessing every year.
“Our employees have embraced this activity,” Rodriguez said. “It gives them an opportunity to reflect on the important work they do, the lives they touch every day, and to know that they are appreciated.”
The Blessing Cart will make rounds between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, and will travel through the hospital again between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. to bless those working the night shift.
