01/30/2003

FORT WORTH, Texas — Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital received the 2003 ICU Design Citation Award for new construction for the David E. Bloxom Sr. Tower for critical care patients. The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the American Institute of Architects sponsor the award. A panel of physicians, nurses and architects judged applications from hospitals in the United States and Canada for the award.

The 98,000 square-foot, five-level Bloxom Tower opened in 2001 to help meet the increasing demand for critical care services in Fort Worth and surrounding communities. The ICU Design Citation Award honors a critical care unit that combines functional ICU design with the humanitarian delivery of critical care. "I was impressed with the way the project facilitated teamwork," said Ellen Pitcher, director of Restorative Care Service. "More than 150 people from all disciplines were involved in the planning of the critical care tower. We established strong, collaborative relationships that continue to serve the hospital today. The Bloxom Tower will serve the growing community for decades to come and will be a legacy to the physicians and staff who were involved in the process."

The SCCM is the leading organization dedicated to ensuring excellence in the practice of critical care and is the only professional organization devoted to the advancement of multidisciplinary, multi-professional intensive care through excellence in patient care, education research and advocacy. The award will be presented to physicians and staff involved in the project at the 32nd Critical Care Congress, which will be held in San Antonio on Jan. 30.

"It is a real tribute to the team of professionals who worked on the critical care tower project," said Lillie Biggins, vice president of Clinical Operations at HMFWH. "The team stayed focused throughout the project on the needs of the community, patients, families, physicians, donor partners and staff. It is an honor to be recognized by the experts in the field for a job well done."
