Texas Health Resources Helps Consumers Navigate Through National Quality Information|
ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas Health Resources (THR) is investing significant effort into educating the public about available measures of hospital quality and how consumers can use the information. THR invites consumers to review its hospital quality scores listed online at texashealth.org/quality. The THR Quality and Patient Safety Web site provides a primer on issues related to quality reports as well as opinions about the usefulness and limitations of various measurements from third parties.
“Texas Health Resources and our family of hospitals – Arlington Memorial Hospital, Harris Methodist Hospitals and Presbyterian Healthcare System – are committed to ongoing and long-term improvement in quality and patient safety,” said Doug Hawthorne, president and CEO. “Because our hospitals are committed to improving the health of the people in the communities we serve, we want to share the measures of our performance with our communities.”
Consumers can now conveniently review a total of 15 different quality measurement indicators associated with treatment for Heart Attack, Community Acquired Pneumonia and Heart Failure at each of the facilities in the THR family of hospitals. The results are updated quarterly and compared with regional and national benchmarks in easy-to-read, color-coded bar charts.
“The health care industry and quality monitoring groups do not have a single definition of “quality” nor is there a single agency, process or metric that measures quality,” said Dr. Michael Deegan, executive vice president and chief clinical and quality officer at THR. “Many of them are accurate and informative if used correctly. Unfortunately, there are also measures that can be misleading and counter-productive. Patients should always consult with their physicians when interpreting data.”
The Quality and Patient Safety section of www.texashealth.org includes information on:
- Signs of Patient Safety
- Quality Indicators
- Chief Quality Officer
- Electronic Health Record
- Patient Satisfaction Scores
- JCAHO Accreditation
- A Brief History of Quality
- Honors and Awards
- Physician and Nurse Credentials
- Quality Reporting by Third Parties
- Employee Retention Rate

Each section is designed to help patients make informed decisions about the quality of their community hospital.
THR plans to add information to its Web site to expand access to useful information and to help consumers understand how the information can be beneficial.
