Springwood Opens Adolescent Treatment Center
BEDFORD, Texas – On September 1, Harris Methodist Springwood Hospital, a psychiatric hospital on the campus of Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital, began offering treatment to adolescents ages 13 to 17.

Harris Methodist Springwood Hospital is responding to the need for increased adolescent psychiatric services in the Tarrant County. A community needs assessment, which included a review of adolescent inpatient, partial hospitalization programs and intensive outpatient programs in Tarrant County, revealed the need for additional facilities to serve its adolescent population.

The volume of calls and walk-ins of parents and their children seeking treatment at Harris Methodist Springwood Hospital, and the requests of local primary care physicians and community health professionals, also indicated the unmet need for adolescent behavioral health services. Prior to this initiative by Harris Methodist Springwood Hospital and Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital, Northeast Tarrant County had no adolescent hospital behavioral health inpatient beds.

Services available to teens include a 20-bed adolescent inpatient unit, a partial hospitalization program and an after-school intensive outpatient program. “We hope to emphasize the after-school and partial hospitalization programs, because it is so important to keep adolescents living at home with their families and in their usual school routine,” said Cathal Grant, MD, chair of the department of psychiatry at Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital. “We recognize that family involvement is essential to recovery. Through individual family sessions and involvement in group therapy, the family will learn about conflict resolution, effective communication and parenting skills.”

Under the direction of a board-certified psychiatrist, each patient will receive an individualized treatment plan that will be implemented by a multidisciplinary team of professionals including licensed clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, a certified teacher, recreational and occupational therapists, chaplains, licensed professional counselors and other professionals. Treatment may include individual, group, family and activity therapy to equip teens with healthy ways to cope with their problems.
