Day of Beauty Treats Spirit of Women with Cancer|
BEDFORD, Texas – A diagnosis of cancer can be as much a blow to a woman's self-esteem as it is to her health. Treatment with chemotherapy and radiation often leads to hair loss and can make it challenging to feel beautiful while undergoing therapy.
Because how one looks on the outside often reflects how one feels on the inside, Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital, Estee Lauder and Saks Fifth Avenue are joining forces on Friday, April 28 to provide women with cancer a type of treatment that does not require CT scans, needles, medication or even a doctor.
“Cancer doesn't take only a physical toll – it's just as much of a psychological battle,” said Mildred Jordan, cancer registrar at Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital and the creator of the program. “How you feel emotionally can have an impact on your ability to get well, so we're really focusing on treating the whole patient – body, mind and spirit.”
Blush brushes, mascara wands, lipstick tubes and fingernail polish will be the instruments of choice as women undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment are pampered at Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital's Day of Beauty. Participants will be treated to a “pampering party” held in the Edwards Cancer Center ground floor Atrium from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.
Women attending the spa day will enjoy beauty tips and make up how-to's from Saks Fifth Avenue beauty consultants. Women also will be treated to manicures and hand and chair massages.
Representatives from Comfort Wigs, Etc. of Lewisville will be on hand to custom fit and style wigs, and offer tips on the latest headdresses for women who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatment. Comfort Wigs, Etc. specializes in wigs and skin care for cancer patients.
Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital began the biannual Day of Beauty program in October 2001. Since then, more than 400 women have participated in the program.
