HMFW CyberKnife® Center Named Among World's Top Facilities|
FORT WORTH, Texas - Josie Myers-Thurmon, 54, a resident of Weatherford, never imagined a simple sore throat and cough could be cancer. Tonsil cancer, no less!
"There are approximately 10,000 to 12,000 tonsil cases diagnosed in the United States each year," said Peter LaNasa, M.D., medical director of the Harris Methodist Fort Worth (HMFW) CyberKnife® Center. "This is still a pretty rare type of cancer compared to other types of cancer, like breast, lung or prostate cancer."
Myers-Thurmon was diagnosed with tonsil cancer in July 2006 and went through extensive radiation and chemotherapy treatments. LaNasa advised Myers-Thurmon to receive her "final boost" using CyberKnife,® and she only required one treatment. Today, Myers-Thurmon is in remission.
Top 10 Treatment Sites in the World
The HMFW CyberKnife® Center was recently ranked seventh among the top 10 extracranial treatment facilities in the world by Accuray, having treated 143 extracranial tumors - those located outside of the brain - in 2007. The center experienced the largest volume during the fourth quarter, treating 49 extracranial patients. The only hospital in Texas to be honored, HMFW was recognized along with hospitals in China, Korea, Spain and six other hospitals nationally.*
"I had a tremendous amount of confidence in my doctors and the entire CyberKnife® team at Harris," Myers-Thurmon said. "I was excited to be part of this new technology that would eliminate my need for surgery. Since my experience with CyberKnife®, I have referred my father-in-law who also had the CyberKnife® treatment."
"More and more patients are choosing CyberKnife®, because it is minimally invasive and allows the patients to get back to their lives quickly," LaNasa said. "We also treat brain tumors with CyberKnife, but we are excited to have been recently recognized for our work in treating extracranial tumors. We have expanded our services to treat more types of tumors, like prostate and lung, allowing more patients to have new treatment options upon diagnosis."
Patient can also benefit from CyberKnife® by having few or no complications with treatment, no hospital stay, and use the treatment in conjunction with other cancer treatments, like chemotherapy and radiation.
