FORT WORTH, Texas — Teenage girls from Juliette Fowler Homes, Inc. will be greeted with new bicycles on Christmas morning, donated by Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital and assembled by its directors.

Hospital directors (clockwise from center) Sam Samuels, Kari Anderson, Glenda Ostrokol, Maureen Bottom, Kristena Clark and Brett McClung show off the bike they built as a team.

For many of the girls, often taken out of abusive homes and moved several places before landing at the Dallas residential treatment facility, the gift will be the only bicycle they may ever have.

“These girls are in many ways today’s orphans,” said Karen Matney Brown, vice president of development for the home, in a letter to the hospital staff. “This donation will certainly be the highlight in many lives.”

Hospital directors assembled the five bicycles as one of several team-building activities during a retreat. Directors split into groups and collaborated to build the gifts.

“Improving the health of the people in our community is our mission at Texas Health,” said Brett McClung, the hospital’s president. "We used our team building time to build meaningful and healthy gifts. I’m pleased we could give the girls of Juliette Fowler Homes a brighter Christmas.”
