Nap Time Helps New Moms Adjust to Babies' Schedules|
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — The most valuable commodities for a new mother often are sleep and quiet time. And Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville has come up with a solution — nap time.
For Vanessa Coonrod of Glen Rose, it’s a great time to bond with her newborn son, Torren.
“He’s not been sleeping at night and seems nocturnal,” she said with a laugh. “Nap time is a good thing. Otherwise family would be popping in at any time of the day. It’s helped.”
Texas Health Stephenville is the second hospital in the Texas Health Resources system to implement nap time for new moms.
And it’s not just designed to help better control visits from families and friends, but also to give new moms a respite from procedures, said Devra LeFevre, R.N., director of nursing for women and children at Texas Health Stephenville.
“We see new moms adjusting to schedules of babies who have not yet learned the difference between night and day and we wanted to give them a chance to rest during the day,” LeFevre said. “Nap time was a great way for staff to give new moms a break from rounding and procedures, unless medically necessary during that time frame, and a way for new moms to have set times for family visits.
“Our new mothers seem to enjoy the quiet moments with their babies during the afternoons.”
Nap time runs from 1 to 4 p.m. each day. Families may visit from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or from 4 to 9 p.m.
“We are proud that our women’s and children’s services staff is continually looking at ways to improve the experiences of new mothers,” said Christopher Leu, Texas Health Stephenville’s president. “As a father of twins, I remember those days of adjusting to our children’s sleep schedules and balancing family visits with time to rest. Texas Health Stephenville’s nurses and caregivers are always on the look out for small tweaks in how we do things that can make a big difference for our patients and their families.
“Nap time is just one example of the great work our women’s and children’s department is doing.”
