CLEBURNE, Texas — The annual list of the Metroplex’s best nurses is out, and three nurses from Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne find themselves honored among the best in their profession. Jackie Laws, R.N., Susie Morrison, R.N.-C., B.S.N., I.B.C.L.C., and Carol Olivier, R.N., B.S., were named to the “Great 100 Nurses” list, an annual award naming the best of the best in the nursing profession in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

“I was shocked,” said Olivier. “I opened up the mailbox and there was my letter. I ran all the way back down the driveway, screaming! There are so many wonderful nurses at Texas Health Cleburne, and thousands in the Metroplex. To say I am honored is quite an understatement.”

Laws, Morrison and Olivier have 73 years of nursing experience between them. Laws is an obstetrics nursing supervisor who relishes teaching and caring for the professional development of her nursing staff.

“I am honored, humbled and grateful for this award,” said Laws. “Not only have I been blessed with such a wonderful career, but also my fellow nurses thought enough of what I do to nominate me. I am grateful for their hard work every day. This is truly a wonderful celebration.”

Olivier leads infection prevention efforts, including education, for staff and patients about caring for their wounds to prevent and monitor infection.

Morrison, a former labor and delivery nurse, is now a lactation specialist and has spent her entire career at Texas Health Cleburne.

“We are thrilled to have three nurses named to the 2009 'Great 100 Nurses' list,” said Blake Kretz, hospital president. “Jackie, Susie and Carol are outstanding examples of how our employees live our mission of improving the health of people in the communities we serve every day.”

The Texas Nurses Association and the Dallas-Fort Worth Nurse Executives annually sponsor the “Great 100 Nurses,” which honors registered nurses in the area who exemplify excellence in the art and science of nursing. Nurses are nominated by their peers, and may only be named to the list once in their career.

In all, Texas Health nurses won 29 of the 100 spots on the coveted list, accounting for almost one-third of the top nurses in the Metroplex — more than any other hospital or health system in the area.

“It is nothing less than a coup,” said Douglas D. Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health. “THR nurses set a high bar for each other, an example of excellence that is made up of hard work and dedication for every patient, every day. I am proud that their work was recognized among the best in our region.”

The “Great 100 Nurses” will be honored by the Texas Nurses Association, Districts 3 and 4, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Nurse Executives at the 19th annual gala on April 19th at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
