“When I heard about the award I was absolutely shocked; it’s probably the biggest honor I’ve ever received,” said Jowers, who is administrative director for applications at Texas Health.

Jowers manages a 125-person team that oversees the more than 300 applications used at Texas Health facilities, along with the data warehouse and data exchange teams. She also is managing the budget for the electronic health record project at Texas Health, called CareConnect.

Five Texas Health hospitals have implemented CareConnect, with the remainder set to go live by the end of 2010.

Jowers said that she has always had a passion for health care though she knew she could not be a doctor or nurse. Instead, working in information technology helps her impact patient care each day.

“That’s why I’ve stayed in health care for 25 years,” she said. “It’s been fascinating to see technology change how we deliver care and do our jobs.”

Jowers was selected by her peers to be nominated for the honor.

“We see in her great potential; she is a gifted leader,” said Edward Marx, chief information officer at Texas Health Resources. “She seeks to continuously improve and doesn’t take no for an answer. She is passionate about her work and Texas Health and it shows with the results she drives from herself and her team.”

This prestigious honor is bestowed upon 25 rising stars in information technology (IT) who bring leadership, innovation and value to their organization and are primed to become future CIOs.

"The one thing they all have in common is their ability to lead," says Maryfran Johnson, CIO editor in chief.

All Ones to Watch honorees must be nominated or endorsed by a practicing CIO. Nominations were submitted between May and November 2008 and reviewed by a judging panel of 29 leading CIOs. Jowers accepted her award at the CIO Ones to Watch awards ceremony on May 4 at Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort and Spa in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
