Renovated Emergency Department at Texas Health Allen Provides More Space, Reduced Wait Times|
ALLEN, Texas — The Emergency Department at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen has expanded to better serve patients in the community, providing decreased wait times and additional treatment space.
The emergency department’s $2.5 million renovation, completed this summer, nearly doubles the size of Texas Health Allen’s full-service emergency facilities, which now include 13 private treatment rooms, two triage bays and a four-bed “Express Care” area.
Designed to allow patients with minor injuries and illnesses to be treated on a “fast-track” basis rather than waiting in line behind patients with more serious injuries, Express Care offers treatment seven days per week for such problems as minor broken bones, cuts and lacerations, colds and coughs, sprains and strains, toothaches and earaches, minor fevers and more.
Patients with more severe injuries are sent to specially equipped private treatment rooms designed to meet needs ranging from heart attacks to trauma, complicated medical conditions to severe illnesses.
“We are excited about our bright new facilities and our improved capacity for meeting patient demands more quickly and efficiently,” said Amy Mabry, R.N., director of critical care services for the hospital. “We realize that patients want to get in to see medical personnel as promptly as possible when sick or injured, and do not want to spend hours waiting to be seen by a doctor. One of the primary goals of our renovation was to reduce lines and wait times in the ED.”
Thanks to the renovation, as well as a recent hospital-wide initiative to improve patient satisfaction levels, wait times for Express Care patients have decreased significantly.
Upon arrival in the emergency department, patients are greeted and registered by an employee manning a “Concierge Desk” and sent to one of two triage areas, where they are assessed by a registered nurse to determine the area of the emergency department where they can appropriately be treated. Texas Health Allen’s emergency department is staffed 24/7 by physicians on the medical staff and by specialized nurses.
“Our new Concierge Desk has been very successful, as patients are greeted with a smile and seen immediately when they walk in the door,” Mabry said. “They are registered into the hospital’s computer system and sent to a triage nurse for assessment. This creates a customer-friendly atmosphere that has been well-received.”

Last year, Texas Health Allen treated about 25,000 patients in its emergency department. Forty percent of the hospital’s admissions come through the emergency department.
