Texas Health Fort Worth Recognized for Excellence in Treatment of Hip Fractures|
FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth is the fourth hospital in the U.S. and the first in Texas to receive the gold seal of approval in the treatment of hip fractures in elderly patients. This disease-specific care certification, given by the Joint Commission, recognizes only those hospitals that have proven to have excellent outcomes for patients and a strong multi-disciplinary program.
“As our baby boomer population ages, our goal was to create a program that focuses on meeting the unique needs for this growing group of individuals,” said Elaine Nelson, director of restorative services at Texas Health Fort Worth.
Designed for the specific needs of patients 60 and older, Texas Health Fort Worth created a program that tailors to the needs of individuals who have fallen and suffered a hip fracture. Once admitted to the hospital, patients are paired with a clinical nurse specialist to develop a treatment plan that includes physical therapy, medication reconciliation, pain management as well as fall prevention education and nutrition.
The less invasive surgical techniques and specialized rehabilitative services allow some patients to begin therapy within a day after surgery, potentially decreasing the average length of stay by nearly two days. The program uses evidence-based guidelines as well as the expertise of orthopedics, surgical recovery, trauma services, pharmacy and case management to assist patients in the recovery process so they are able to return to their normal productive lifestyles as soon as possible.
“This program provides multi-disciplinary, evidence-based medical care with a track record of continually improving outcomes in patients,” said Dr. Arvind Nana, medical director of the geriatric hip fracture program at Texas Health Fort Worth. “Our objective is to provide individualized care that gives our geriatric hip fracture patients the best opportunity to return to a productive life.”
