Texas Health Cleburne Offers Saturday Appointments for Mammogram Screenings

CLEBURNE, Texas — Women who need their annual mammogram screening now won’t have to worry about how to fit the appointment into their work schedule. Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne will offer mammogram appointments one Saturday a month.

Appointments will be scheduled between 8 a.m. and noon. Upcoming Saturday appointments will be available April 24 and May 22. The Saturday appointments are for screening mammograms only.

“We want to offer women different options for scheduling their mammograms and for many Saturday mornings is the only time that they can break away from work or family duties,” said Lee Lennington, director of radiology at Texas Health Cleburne. “Getting a digital mammogram is an important check for women wanting to maintain good health. By extending our hours to the weekend we hope to make it even more convenient for women to do so.”

Admissions staff and a clerk in the radiology department also will work the Saturday schedule to assist women coming for mammogram appointments.

“Lee and his staff consistently look for ways to better serve the patients of Texas Health Cleburne,” said Blake Kretz, FACHE, hospital president. “Extending the hours is just another step they have implemented to help improve the health of women in the communities we serve.”

In 2009, the hospital upgraded to digital mammography equipment, which was made possible by financial support from the Black & White Gala and the hospital auxiliary. The hospital is also accredited for mammography by the American College of Radiology.

Younger women and women with dense breasts benefit most from digital images because the technology makes it easier to penetrate dense breast tissue. Radiologists also can better create contrasts when reading the images.

The National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the American College of Radiology recommend women 40 and older have annual mammograms. Women with dense breasts or who are younger than 50 are specifically encouraged to get a digital mammogram, according to breastcancer.org.
