Texas Health Cleburne Recognized for Quality Respiratory Care and Patient Safety Efforts
05/03/2010

CLEBURNE, Texas — Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne has earned recognition from a leading national organization for quality respiratory care and patient safety.

Texas Health Cleburne received the Quality Respiratory Recognition award from the American Association for Respiratory Care. The program recognizes respiratory programs that meet the high standards set by the association for treating asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, and other lung conditions.

“This is a great honor for our staff, but it’s really about our patients and people in the local community,” said Kevin Sullivan, cardiopulmonary manager at Texas Health Cleburne. “This recognition lets patients know they can come here and receive a high-level of care.”

The association’s quality recognition program was started in 2003 to help consumers identify hospitals that provide quality respiratory care. Hospitals earning the designation ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services, according to the association. About 15 percent of hospitals in the United States have received this award.

Blake Kretz, FACHE, hospital president, said “holding ourselves to high quality standards is another way we are dedicated to improving the health of people in the communities we serve.”

In addition to chronic lung conditions seen in adult patients, respiratory therapists also care for premature infants and are key members of rapid response teams that handle medical emergencies at the hospital.

“Respiratory care is an area that can touch any patient in the hospital and provides a valuable service to our community whether it’s helping young children with asthma or older adults with difficulty breathing,” said Dr. Andrew Anyadiegwu, a pulmonologist on the medical staff at Texas Health Cleburne. “Meeting these requirements shows a level of care consistent with national standards and guidelines and reflects a commitment to quality care.”

To qualify for the recognition, Texas Health Cleburne provided documentation showing:

  • All respiratory therapists at the hospital are certified by the state to provide respiratory care or are credentialed as certified respiratory technicians or registered respiratory technicians.
  • Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours a day.
  • Other personnel qualified to perform specific respiratory procedures and the amount of supervision required for personnel to carry out specific procedures must be designated in writing.
  • A doctor of medicine or osteopathy is designated as medical director of respiratory care services.
