Single-Incision Options Now Available for Gallbladder Removal at Texas Health Cleburne|
CLEBURNE, Texas — More than a decade ago, getting a gallbladder removed would have taken an incision several inches long with a painful recovery ahead. In the past decade, laparoscopic surgery has cut the size of the scar to four smaller incisions and the recovery time has been trimmed significantly as well. But now, patients facing the removal of their gallbladder may have the option for the surgery to be performed with a single, half-inch long, incision near the navel.
The single-incision procedure is not for everyone. Some patients will still need to have their gallbladder removed by other methods. But for some patients at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne a single-incision surgery may now be possible. Dr. Kari Frano, a general surgeon on the medical staff at Texas Health Cleburne, recently began performing the procedure.
In addition to less scarring, the benefits of the single-incision procedure include a lower risk of inflammation, less pain and less bleeding, said Frano. “The recovery time is relatively the same as the time it takes to recover from a normal laparoscopic gallbladder removal procedure, but the benefits of the single-incision procedures are promising.”
During the procedure, Frano makes about a half-inch incision near the navel. A laparoscopic camera, a stapler for the blood vessels, and an instrument to cut are used throughout the procedure.
“We were pleased when Dr. Frano joined the medical staff because she brought an interest in performing more laparoscopic surgeries to Texas Health Cleburne,” said Blake Kretz, FACHE, hospital president. “When patients are sick they want to heal as fast as possible and stay as close to home for their medical care as possible. Dr. Frano’s work with minimally invasive procedures does just that.”
In addition to gallbladder removal, Frano said that a single-incision procedure for appendix removal and some colon surgeries are also on the horizon as procedures that may be offered at Texas Health Cleburne.
“We want our community to know that we offer many of the same procedures that are offered in Fort Worth and Dallas here in Cleburne and there is no reason to travel out-of-town,” Frano added.
