Family Involvement Can Help Improve Health of Children, Teens

CLEBURNE, Texas — Statistics on childhood obesity seem to be everywhere and the numbers are staggering. One out of three children in the United States is overweight or obese.

“One way to change that bleak statistic is for families to work together to improve their overall health,” said Dr. Sandra Tinley, a pediatrician who recently joined the medical staff of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne. “In addition to living a healthier lifestyle by tackling the challenges of healthy eating and activity as a family it helps to give families a healthy way to spend their time.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that families take simple steps to improve the health of children. Those recommendations include:

  • Eat meals together as a family regularly
  • Eat breakfast daily
  • Choose low-fat dairy products
  • Engage in one hour of physical activity each day
  • Limit time spent on the computer or watching TV to less than two hours a day
  • Eat healthy meals at home rather than choosing fast food, take out or eating at restaurants

“Many times we hear parents lament the lack of time they can spend with their families,” Tinley said. “By involving even small children in mealtime and activity decisions the whole family gets to take ownership of living a healthier lifestyle. As the summer comes to a close and school starts again it can be a great time to set new routines to live healthier as a family.”
