Texas Health Plano Wins Environmental Award From North Texas Corporate Recycling Association|
PLANO, Texas — Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano’s aggressive efforts to go green were rewarded this month with the Stupendous Recycling Service award from the North Texas Corporate Recycling Association.
The hospital deployed a Go Green Committee — an employee-led 30-member task force — to create aggressive recycling initiatives that resulted in 21 percent of all hospital waste being recycled. That represents a 12 percent increase in the amount of trash recycled over the previous year.
“Texas Health Plano produces between 60 and 100 tons of trash every month, and we feel a sense of responsibility to the community to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Taffi Marchand, R.N., a nurse in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and co-chair of the Go Green Committee. “It took a team effort to change the amount of trash we recycled on a regular basis. We couldn’t have done it without the overwhelming support of our co-workers and their participation in the program.”
The committee was responsible for educating employees about the importance of recycling and identifying recyclable materials, in addition to providing receptacles for recyclable waste in each work station. They also recruited “champions” in many of the hospital’s departments to make rounds and encourage participation.
“I am so proud of the way our employees embraced this important initiative and the stellar efforts they put forth to create a positive impact for our environment,” said Dr. Jeffrey Canose, president of Texas Health Plano.
In addition to paper, plastics, aluminum and glass, Texas Health Plano recycles batteries, cell phones and other electronic devices, as well as cooking oil, compact fluorescent light bulbs and toner cartridges.
“This award helps motivate us to push harder,” said Cathy Bohrer, director of Laboratory Services at Texas Health Plano and co-chair of the Go Green Committee. “It gives us a lot of momentum. Our next project is to pilot recycling bins in patient rooms.”
The Go Green Committee’s ultimate goal is to recycle as much as 35 percent of the hospital’s annual waste.
