Vascular Screenings

Vascular screenings at Texas Health Resources hospitals

Vascular screening programs at Texas Health Resources hospitals help to uncover potentially fatal conditions in the body's transportation — or vascular — system. A vascular screening can identify individuals at risk for stroke, ruptured aneurysm and peripheral arterial disease.

The vascular system carries blood to vital organs throughout the body. If left undetected, a weakness of the blood vessel wall or blockage within this system can lead to a debilitating stroke, deadly aneurysm rupture, limb amputation or other serious disability.

The screening includes simple, non-invasive tests that will determine if a patient has a vascular problem. Those with issues are referred to a physician for treatment.

Persons age 55 or older with vascular disease risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol or a family history of stroke, heart disease, aneurysm or other circulatory problems should undergo screening.

The screening takes about 15 minutes and costs $120. It includes an ultrasound of neck arteries, an ultrasound of abdominal artery and Doppler measurements of the ankle arteries.

Cardiovascular Screenings

Cardiovascular screenings at Texas Health Resources hospitals

Heart disease occurs at a rate of nearly double that of all cancers, according to the American Heart Association. Nearly 39 percent of female deaths in the United States are from cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

Nine Texas Health Resources hospitals offer cardiovascular screenings. Your 20-minute appointment includes a heart health history, an ABI (lower-extremity Doppler test), blood pressure check, C-reactive protein blood test, EKG and cholesterol and diabetes checks.

It also includes an appointment with a health care provider to discuss your results. The cost for this screening is $120.

To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, the American Heart Association recommends that people control any high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly.

Digital Mammography

Digital mammography at Texas Health Resources hospitals

Digital mammography, which is offered at nine Texas Health Resources hospitals, is significantly better at detecting cancer than conventional film mammography, according to the National Cancer Institute, especially for women under 50 and women of any age with dense breasts.

And because the image captured is digital and can be enhanced by a computer, there's less exposure to radiation. With this leading edge in technology, registered technologists and radiologists on the medical staff bring a high level of care for you as an individual.

The National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the American College of Radiology recommend women 40 and older have annual mammograms. Women with dense breasts or are younger than 50 are specifically encouraged to get a digital mammogram, according to breastcancer.org.

Digital mammography creates a clear, high-def image with higher quality images than conventional screen-film technology. Click the button below to request an appointment for a screening mammogram at a Texas Health facility near you.
