WFAA highlights technology in Texas Health Dallas NICU

The NICU at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas was featured during the evening newscast on WFAA (Ch. 8). Chris Brooks, manager of the NICU, spoke about the positive aspects of the Peek-A-Boo cameras installed on 10 cribs in the unit. At this time, the video and audio capabilities of the camera are the first of its kind in a North Texas NICU. An East Texas mom also shared her story and how important the cameras have been to sharing her baby’s milestones with family members who can’t be at the bedside.

With a quick two-second scan of the palm, the high-tech system maps the vein pattern of a patient’s hand, which is considered more accurate than a fingerprint. The scanner uses a near-infrared light similar to the signal emitted by a TV remote control. That image is then tied to the patient’s electronic medical record, reducing the risk that two people with the same name and birth date are ever confused. Scott Phillips, director of patient access services for Texas Health, was quoted.

The neonatal intensive care unit at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas is the first hospital in the region with an audio-video system that lets parents who can’t be at their child’s bedside see and talk to their baby any time of day from any computer. A story about the system, called “Peek-a-Boo Neonatal ICU,” aired Jan. 10 on KTVT-TV (Ch. 11).

The web-based system also lets parents see their babies from any smartphone. Dr. Gerald Nystrom, medical director of the Texas Health Dallas NICU, talked about the system, which is aimed at parents whose sick babies have extended stays in the NICU. Specially designed speaker systems inside each crib control the volume of the parent’s voice to soothe the baby and help parent and child bond.
