Youth Prodigy Program

The Texas Health Resources Youth Prodigy program is designed to attract young people to the nursing or allied health fields and to alleviate a career shortage that will continue to worsen as baby boomers reach retirement. The program offers education and employment to high school graduates who are interested in pursuing an Associate's Degree in Nursing or Radiology prior to obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree.

The program offers paid summer training and part-time job placement. Students work part-time at a Texas Health hospital while attending school, and Texas Health covers the cost of tuition, fees, books and related supplies.

Once students have completed an eight-week summer training experience and pass a national Patient Care Technician (PCT) certification exam, they apply for part-time positions at Texas Health facilities. These paid, part-time positions afford them the same benefits as any other part-time Texas Health employee.

"This program is life changing for the students and their families, and we are thrilled to be a part of not only shaping their career paths but serving as their introduction to the field of health care," said Dr. Jim Dunn, Texas Health's Chief Learning Officer.

"The Youth Prodigy Program has jump-started my efforts toward a great career in the medical field.  This program has adequately equipped me with all of the tools necessary to confidently advance toward my life goals," said Cole Carrillo, a 2009 Prodigy participant voted "Best Student in Clinical Rotations" by Texas Health faculty.
