BEDFORD, Texas — Jennifer Meckley, B.S.N., RNC-NIC, a charge nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford, recently received a national award from the Academy of Neonatal Nursing.

Meckley received the 2019 Excellence in Neonatal Nursing Practice Award and recently traveled to Orlando to pick up the award at the organization's national conference. She has worked in the NICU for more than 15 years as a bedside, delivery and charge nurse.
"Jennifer is both a compassionate person and nurse, which comes from her own personal experience as a mother of a 27-weeker," says her nomination letter. "She uses this life experience to connect and share her story with her patients."
Meckley is the coauthor of an evidence-based practice journal article titled, "NICU Nurses and Families Partnering to Provide Neuroprotective Family-Centered Developmental Care," which was published in the Neonatal Network October 2018 issue. She also is a team member for a Texas Christian University Evidence-Based Practice Fellowship working toward increasing the provision of mom's own milk in the NICU.
"Jennifer has a wonderfully calm personality that enables her to handle any crisis with ease," said Tricia Caden, R.N., RNC-NIC, Texas Health HEB NICU nursing supervisor. "She is very organized with a quick mind. She is able to process the situation, using her extensive knowledge, and apply critical thinking to make decisions to improve patient outcomes. The staff and patient families love working with Jennifer."
Meckley also has participated in many evidence-based practice projects that have been presented nationally and internationally.
According to the Academy of Neonatal Nursing's website, the award recognizes "the accomplishments of those nurses who strive to provide the best nursing care possible to their patients. These nurses demonstrate a strong commitment to their patients and show creativity, intelligence, perseverance, and an unbending will to be the best. The Academy wishes to celebrate these often-unsung heroes and the work that they do."
