Autism Screening

Q: “Our pediatrician would like to have our son evaluated, possibly for autism. We’re worried about him, too, but think he may just be shy. Is our doctor being too careful?”

A: Our understanding of autism has increased so that the subtler signs, such as extreme shyness, are being noted at earlier ages. The earlier autism is diagnosed, the sooner intervention and treatment can begin.

While your son may indeed simply be shy, even that characteristic can benefit from early intervention to prevent it from limiting his social development. A referral for evaluation can produce information and guidance whether an autism diagnosis is the result or not.
