When time is just as valuable as your health, the ability to access care on your schedule can be a lifesaver. Just ask Doug Schultze.
The former energy services executive was often on the road for work, balancing his high-stress job with other commitments. At the time, his company offered its executives the opportunity to participate in an executive physical program on an annual basis. Doug took advantage of the program up until his company was purchased and it was no longer offered.

With a family history of heart disease and stroke (his father had a heart attack and his mother had an enlarged heart that ultimately led to a stroke), Doug knew it was important to keep an eye on his health beyond the executive physical program. The now 70-year-old was based in Oklahoma City and had an area cardiologist who monitored his heart health and blood pressure medications.
When he retired and set down roots in Fredericksburg, Texas, however, Doug had to generally rely on routine primary care exams to manage his health. Wanting something more, he decided to pursue executive-level care on his own with the hope that a more detailed exam would offer some insights into his health while factoring in his family history of heart disease. Having once lived in the Fort Worth area, Doug considered executive health services from Texas Health as a good option.
The benefits of an advanced level of preventive care through Texas Health include personalized head-to-toe attention and improved care options, like fast appointment scheduling and simplified coordination of specialist care. Doug reached out to Texas Health Executive Direct, a Texas Health Physicians Group practice, and soon found himself scheduled to meet with an internist in the practice’s Fort Worth location. In preparation for his exam, he was also able to elect to have various tests done during the appointment. Without much thought, he opted for a cardiac calcium scan to look for any calcium buildup in his heart arteries.
“I used to have PVCs many years ago when I was working and under a lot of stress,” Doug admits. “It would feel like my heart was skipping a beat. Since retiring, I’ve been in good health and work out regularly at the gym. I haven’t really had any recent symptoms, but the doctor agreed that the test was a good precaution.”
Doug completed the executive physical, including the cardiac calcium scan, and not a moment too soon. The results indicated he had significant plaque buildup in two major arteries: 90 percent blockage in one artery and 60 percent blockage in the other.
Premium Care Across the Miles
As a resident of a small community, Doug had been navigating his care across the miles for some time. Although he was able to do a virtual follow-up visit with his physician, he made arrangements to see a cardiologist in Marble Falls for his much-needed interventions. Doug ultimately underwent three heart catheterizations with three stent placements — all critical procedures that helped reduce his chances of experiencing a heart event.
Doug is now back to working out at the gym and doing cardio rehabilitation. He is grateful for the quick access to care that was made possible through Texas Health Executive Direct and notes that the health report provided on the spot remains valuable information.
After his visit, he had this to share with the staff:
You guys have hopefully helped me miss out on a heart attack if I can make it through to Oct. 28 [date of final stent surgery] without any excitement. It turns out that having no symptoms is a benefit AND a curse, I guess. If I had not had the calcium scan, none of this would be happening. Thank you.
Doug adds that he and his wife are considering a move back to the DFW area.
