  • Concussion Management

The best defense is a good offense when it comes to a sports concussion. Any athlete suspected of having a concussion should be removed from play for the remainder of the game, and a medical evaluation should be performed by a physician prior to returning to play. The best guideline in seeking medical treatment is to note symptoms that worsen, and behaviors that are unusual.

Know The Signs Of A Concussion

You should seek immediate medical assistance if any of these signs are visible:

    • Worsening headache.
    • Marked drowsiness.
    • Confusion, inability to recognize people and places.
    • Vomiting.
    • Seizures.
    • Unsteadiness.
    • Slurred speech.
    • Bleeding or clear fluid coming from the ears/nose.
    • Pupils unequally dilated.

Because younger athletes’ brains are still developing, they often need more time to recover from a concussion, and the risk of a prolonged injury is greater if they return to the field too quickly.

Providing Safe And Effective Concussion Management

At Texas Health Orthopedic Specialists, our goal is to return athletes to play as quickly and safely as possible after concussion.

    Our program is aimed at:

    • Educating athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, and parents about the symptoms of concussion, and how best to manage them.
    • Providing the diagnosis, testing, and follow-up care necessary to prevent and treat concussion injuries.

We offer Baseline ImPACT™ Testing before an injury, and rapid scheduling of appointments for individuals with suspected concussions. ImPACT testing is used by nearly every professional sports team, as well as college programs and more than 3,000 school districts nationwide. This online test establishes an athlete’s baseline neurocognitive function and includes balance testing.

Following a concussion, the athlete takes the test again, allowing the computer system to calculate if there’s been a change to his or her cognitive efficiency. An ImPACT assessment can help us determine when it is safe for an athlete to return to play after a concussion.
