Blessing of HandsClinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an action-reflection process model of education that utilizes clinical ministry, supervision, peer interaction and reflection for the formation and development of pastoral identity, competency and specialization.

At the Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospitals CPE Center, students can expect ministry placement in the context of a faith-based hospital system that includes a 750-bed downtown Level 2 trauma center and three suburban community hospitals.

Clinical areas of ministry include emergency, trauma, obstetrics, gynecology, cardiology, neurology, oncology, and palliative care.

With an emphasis on the formation of pastoral/theological skills, the center's curriculum invites and challenges students to expand the horizon of their pastoral ability and presence.

CPE programs offered are:

  • Residency — a one-year (four unit) program offering Level I and Level II CPE. Full-time, 40 hours per week plus extended shift. Includes stipend and benefits.
  • Summer Internship — 12-week program offering Level I CPE. Full-time, 40 hours per week plus extended shift. No stipend and no benefits.
  • Extended — Part-time program (average 15-18 hours per week including extended shift), generally offered fall through spring. Level I CPE. No stipend and no benefit.
  • Supervisory Residency — for the student seeking certification by the ACPE as a CPE Supervisor.
