Surgery Criteria

Through consultation, your surgeon will determine if you are a candidate for weight-loss surgery. However, in order to be considered, patients generally must:

  • Be 18 to 65 years old
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of more than 40 kg/m2 or an average of 100 pounds overweight, or have a BMI of more than 35kg/m2 with one or more additional health problems as affected by obesity such as diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension, dyslipidemia, infertility and Pickwickian syndrome
  • Have had only short-term success at serious and multiple attempts to lose weight
  • Be committed to making substantial changes in eating habits and lifestyle, and to long-term follow up with their surgeon
  • Many insurance companies are now requiring patients to have completed a Physician Supervised Weight Management Program prior to authorizing weight loss surgery. Please contact your insurance carrier to see if this is a requirment of your contract. Contact our bariatric coordinator at 817-960-6687 for more information.
