Birthday Buddies

Six-year-old Max wanted to make a special request of his birthday party guests: Instead of gifts, bring donations for the critically ill infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth.

“I knew I didn’t need any more toys, but I thought the babies might need some things,” Max said.

Touched by Max’s giving heart, his parents obtained a list of needs from the hospital’s NICU staff and included the information in his party invitations. Max’s friends donated everything from blankets to preemie clothes to bouncy seats for the babies.

“Gifts at birthday parties can get excessive,” said Hollie, Max’s mom. “This is a fun way to rally everyone around a good cause and teach children the importance of giving back to the community.”

Max named this philanthropic outreach “Birthday Buddies.”
