American Heart Association’s Well-being Works Better™ Scorecard recognizes commitment to health

Texas Health leaders believe national recognition helps create a healthy work-life balance among employees.

The scorecard, formerly known as the Workforce Well-being Scorecard,™ analyzes the latest research and insights from industry leaders to help businesses create a science-backed, employee-focused culture of health and well-being. The tool enables employers to evaluate how their policies and procedures compare with leading best practices in areas such as mental health support, employee burnout, financial well-being and health equity.

Carla Dawson, Texas Health’s chief people officer, said the national recognition is appreciated, but more importantly, it serves as a litmus test for creating a healthy work-life balance among employees.

“The American Heart Association’s scorecard provides us with valuable insight and verifies that we are keeping in tune with trending health and well-being initiatives,” Dawson said.

“Healthcare is a rewarding yet demanding career field, and helping employees thrive in and out of the workplace is imperative,” she said. “Establishing supportive relationships within Texas Health helps us care for one another, so we can focus on individuals coming through our doors.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, organizations that create a culture of health in the workplace can improve retention.

Companies are scored on the following criteria for the AHA recognition, with a maximum total of 230 points:

  • Leadership support
  • Organizational policies and environment
  • Communications
  • Programs and interventions
  • Engagement
  • Community partnerships
  • Reporting outcomes
  • Health equity
  • Organizational well-being

Recognition is categorized using four levels, with Platinum being the highest:

  • Platinum — companies have achieved a score of 217 or higher
  • Gold — companies have achieved a score of 183-216
  • Silver — companies have achieved a score of 137-182
  • Bronze — companies have achieved a score of 91-136

In 2023, 492 organizations were recognized by the American Heart Association. Texas Health is one of only 8%, or less than 40 organizations, to achieve Platinum recognition.
