Three Concussions Can't Keep Kylie Down
Young injury sufferer gets answers to plaguing problems at Orthopedic Specialty Associates
At the age of 10, Kylie Volentine experienced what would be the first of three concussions. An accident on the school playground in September 2013 left Kylie with persistent headaches, amnesia, severe hearing loss in both ears and the temporary inability to walk. The incident left her family lost and unable to get a clear-cut diagnosis.
“After several months of going from one specialist to another with no real answers and no relief for Kylie, a recommendation from a family member made all the difference,” explained Kylie’s mother Emily. “My mom had seen some information on Orthopedic Specialty Associates and suggested I check them out. We were seen quickly and the staff made us feel like we weren’t stupid.”
Kylie was examined by sports medicine specialist Damond Blueitt, M.D. After a few basic motion tests, he was able to pinpoint the cause of Kylie’s struggles.
“On my initial evaluation of Kylie, it was obvious she was dealing with Post-Concussion Syndrome with significant vestibular and ocular impairment,” Dr. Blueitt explained. “This type of traumatic brain injury causes problems with balance and vision. Kylie was put on medication and a very limited activity regimen to relieve her headaches and promote hearing and stamina improvement. She was also prescribed vestibular and ocular rehab.”
By January 2015, the headaches were gone and Kylie’s hearing was restored. She was playing club volleyball, until a collision with a teammate again resulted in a concussion.
“It was like starting all over again,” Kylie said. “But this time, the headaches were worse and my eyes became blurry.”
The Volentines turned once more to Dr. Blueitt. Another course of medication and management of the condition was underway when a mishap in the family’s pool took place in the spring of 2016. You guessed it: a third concussion.
“We are again in the process of rehabilitation,” Emily reported. “We’re on the right track thanks to Dr. Blueitt, the staff at Orthopedic Specialty Associates and lots of prayers. Through it all, Dr. Blueitt treated and still treats Kylie as if she’s his own child. The care and time he takes to hear our concerns and look for answers is amazing. He has been studying Kylie’s case and is always looking for medication options to improve Kylie’s outcome and to get her back to being a normal, active teen.”
