One of the best ways to determine if your body is losing bone mass is with a bone mineral density test. If your bone density is found to be low, you and your doctor can work together on a treatment plan to help prevent fractures before they occur.
Simple bone density scans using portable machines may check the density of your wrist or heel. However, keep in mind that hip and spine scans, like DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), are more reliable.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen
Type of bone mineral density test offered: DEXA
Cost: $217.00 for the hospital charge, plus a fee for the reading of the test from the radiologist (which is usually about half of the hospital fee).
Insurance information:
- Most health insurance plans cover this test for women 50 and over, or with a family history of osteoporosis
- An order from your physician is required
- Medicare covers every other year. If the patient is on medications for osteoporosis, Medicare usually covers the test annually
Reasons to have a bone density screen are:
- Known osteoporosis
- Loss of height
- Certain medication usage
- Family history
- Post-menopausal patients

- The weight limit is 300 lbs
- You should be 23 or older
- The test uses a small amount of X-rays, so you should not have the exam if you are pregnant
- If you have been injected with any contrast or radio-pharmaceuticals for Cat scans/MRI or Nuclear Medicine exams, you should wait 48-72 hours to have a DEXA scan
- The patient should also be free of any barium used in XR exams

Cost: $217.00 for the hospital charge, plus a fee for the reading of the test from the radiologist (which is usually about half of the hospital fee).
