Texas Health Resources Receives National Award for Promoting Employee Well-Being

ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Health Resources has been named one of the “2012 Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles” by the National Business Group on Health.

“Our mission is to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve,” said Douglas D. Hawthorne, FACHE, CEO of Texas Health Resources. “Improving health begins with our own employees and is just one part of how we advance a healthier North Texas community.”

Having won Silver and Gold awards in previous years, for 2012 Texas Health again earned Gold distinction for its commitment to promoting a healthy workplace and encouraging employees and their families to maintain healthy lifestyles through its “Be Healthy” employee wellness program.

Texas Health was among 66 U.S. employers to receive the award in late June at the “Leadership Summit” in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the National Business Group on Health’s Institute on Innovation in Workforce Well-being. Now in its eighth year, the “Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles” awards annually acknowledge those employers that have responded to the urgent need to improve their employees’ health, productivity and quality of life.

Gold award winners were honored for making cultural and environmental changes and developing comprehensive programs that support employees’ healthy lifestyle goals. The underlying goal of the award program is to encourage all employers to take action.

Through Be Healthy, part of Texas Health’s comprehensive benefits package, employees can earn cash gift cards each year by completing elements of the program. Texas Health also offers many innovative ways to help employees better understand and manage their health: disease-management and tobacco-cessation programs; on-site fitness centers; health fairs; fitness challenges; maternity support; lifestyle coaching; diabetes education; medical nutrition therapy; and on-site hospital case management. Employees also can take advantage of healthy-back, employee-assistance and Weight Watchers at Work programs.

“We are thrilled to be recognized for our advocacy of employee well-being and believe that programs like Be Healthy set Texas Health apart as an employer of choice,” said Michelle Kirby, Texas Health’s senior vice president and chief HR officer.

The National Business Group on Health is the nation’s only nonprofit membership organization of large employers that is devoted exclusively to finding solutions to employee health care and related benefits issues.

“We are very pleased to recognize Texas Health Resources for its ongoing commitment to providing lifestyle improvement programs that encourage healthy lifestyles for their employees,” said Helen Darling, president and CEO of the National Business Group on Health. “Texas Health and its management team should be proud of their dedication and for recognizing the importance of promoting and maintaining a healthy workforce. We congratulate them on receiving this award.”
