For patients who have not had bariatric surgery before and are contemplating weight loss greater than 30 lbs, the gastric balloon is an excellent weight loss option. In this procedure, a saline filled balloon the size of a grapefruit is placed without surgery into the stomach aided by a camera placed through the mouth. This 30 minute procedure is done under anesthesia and patients are able to go home on the same day. Most patients have temporary nausea that resolves.
