Achalasia is a medical condition caused by the failure of the esophagus to relax. Food and saliva build up and result in stretching the esophagus. This may predispose patients to be at risk for precancerous acid reflux changes and also esophageal cancer. Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy is the gold standard procedure for patients who have achalasia. A myotomy is a release of the outer layers of muscle that allows the patient to swallow without vomiting.
