Time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren more fun now for Keylon.

For Plano retiree Gary Keylon, 67, the opportunities he lost to run and play with his children and grandchildren weigh heavily on him. The pain in his knees was just too much. “It took that away,” Keylon said, tears in his eyes.

Keylon suffered from arthritis in both of his knees, a result of injuries he suffered in an accident while riding a motorcycle and one on a four-wheeler. Damage in both of his knees caused arthritis in his cartilage, and discomfort with every step.

Texas Center for Joint Replacement: Patient Testimonial – Gary Keylon

Keylon turned to Kwame Ennin, M.D., for help. Dr. Ennin is an orthopedic surgeon with the Texas Center for Joint Replacement, a Texas Health Physicians Group practice, and is a physician on the medical staff of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano.

“Post-traumatic arthritis is what Gary suffered from,” Dr. Ennin explained, “which developed as a result of a traumatic event. Injury to the cartilage over the years led to significant arthritis.”

Dr. Ennin recommended knee replacements for Keylon, which was performed at Texas Health Plano. The left knee was replaced first, followed by the right knee a few months later. One day after his last knee replacement, Keylon was walking around on it at a fast clip with the help of a walker to steady himself.

Just three months post-surgery, Keylon couldn’t believe what he was able to do. “I can get around much, much better – nothing I could have even considered, even comprehended, I would be able to do. I’m so thankful,” he said. “Heck, I even look younger!”

In addition to a much more youthful gait, Keylon is able to appreciate the youngsters in his own family more. “I love my children but Lord knows how I love them grandchildren,” he said. “And yes, it’s much more fun with them now, to play with them and do things I wasn’t able to do before.”
