Group of healthcare professionalsTexas is facing an increasing shortage of nurses – 30,000 currently, with that number expected to double by 2032, according to the Texas Nurses Association.

The Fort Worth Report recently spoke with Vanessa Lozada, B.S.N., R.N., about how Texas Health helped her and others grow their knowledge and skills.

“The need for recruitment is crucial,” Lozada, director of Emergency Services at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, told the Fort Worth Report.

Lozada explained that Texas Health provided tuition reimbursement which ultimately helped her land her dream job.

“It could help make up the minds of those indecisive about entering nursing school,” she said.

Over the last few years, Texas Health has introduced new pipeline programs to attract and retain team members, including “earn as you learn” options. The FastTrack Certified Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician and Pharmacy Technician apprenticeship programs help employees upskill capabilities to advance their careers. It’s a win-win for the system and the individual, filling roles required to expand access to healthcare in our growing region.

So far, over 600 individuals have participated in these programs. Additionally, more than 2,000 benefits-eligible employees use tuition reimbursement yearly.

Equally important is introducing students to the opportunities of healthcare careers. At Texas Health, we collaborate with the Dallas Independent School District's Pathways in Technology Early College program.

“We are focusing on creating opportunities for underrepresented groups through strategic partnerships with local schools,” said Carla Dawson, chief people officer. "We’re introducing students in our underserved communities to vocational healthcare careers. Most of these programs are also open to internal candidates who may be considering a career change or looking to grow their skills and advance.”

Advancing careers and encouraging people to join the industry is vital to the health of our communities. More information about how we are attracting and retaining the best can be found on our website.
