Physicians on the medical staff perform kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive spinal surgery procedure, for the treatment of pain associated with compression fractures of the part of the spine called a vertebra, often caused by osteoporosis. This innovative procedure involves inserting a special balloon inside the vertebra. When inflated the balloon restores the vertebra to its normal height and shape. The balloon is then deflated and removed, leaving an opening that the physician fills with bone cement to strengthen the vertebra. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, it is recommended that kyphoplasty be performed soon after compression fractures of the spine to best restore vertebral body height and size.
