Helping the community, one mile at a time.

Through the Wellness for Life® Mobile Program, Texas Health Resources has been able to reach thousands of women in Fort Worth and surrounding communities who face barriers to health care, such as financial hardship, transportation challenges and cultural isolation. Texas Health mobile units travel to under-served areas to meet women in need where they live, work and worship and provide vital health services at no cost.

The mobile health outreach to these under-served women include:

  • Digital screening mammograms
  • Breast diagnostic procedures
  • Well-woman exams and cervical cancer screenings
  • Colon cancer screenings
  • Cardiovascular risk assessments

Eliminating an Obstacle to Care

Shanda Mayberry has been a nurse for over 22 years. As a busy working mother, it was hard to find time for routine health check-ups, always having reasons to put off making an appointment for an annual exam.

In 2021, Shanda took part in a Wellness for Life® for life breast cancer screening. The mobile health unit eliminated the obstacle of having to take off work or make excuses. During the routine screening and mammogram, abnormalities were found. After biopsy and testing, Shanda heard the dreaded words that she indeed had breast cancer.

Instead of providing care, Shanda became the one receiving care. This was the beginning of a long journey with treatment, surgeries and a new normal.

Shanda believes “I am very fortunate to have an employer that provides insurance which covers well woman exams but not every woman has insurance or the financial resources for testing. The mobile health unit eliminates the costs associated with these routine tests, and that is why it is so important that we support this program. By supporting this initiative, you not only impact the lives of the women who receive care but also the lives of their loved ones and friends within the community. Cancer is a deadly disease that does not discriminate based on race, culture or economic status.”

Shanda is happy to be cancer free these days but is now part of the Wellness for Life host committee, helping to raise funds to support the program. “I am so grateful for this program that brought the Mobile Unit right to my doorstep and allowed for me to be diagnosed early and have a good prognosis. Not only was it convenient but a great experience because they provided exceptional care,” said Shanda.

Texas Health Resources Mobile Health Program gains support from community business leaders by bringing important health services to the underserved men and women in North Texas. The program provides screening services including mammograms, well female and male exams, colon cancer screenings, and skin cancer screenings. The support of these businesses increases access to life-saving services while meeting the needs of underserved populations, creating community impact, and reducing health disparities across North Texas.

Later this year, the Texas Health Resources Foundation will host a reception in honor of all those who supported the Wellness for Life® Mobile Health Program in 2023. Thank you in advance for your support of women’s health as we work to improve the health of all women in the communities we serve. You are truly helping us to make a difference.
