- A native of South Africa, Dr. Cynara Coomer completed her medical degree at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Southern California. She fulfilled her general surgery residency at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she served as chief resident.
Dr. Coomer has been a board-certified general surgeon since 2006. She previously served as Chief of Breast Surgery and director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at Staten Island University Hospital in New York. Before joining Staten Island University Hospital, she was a breast surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. At both hospitals she established a clinical practice devoted to treating breast diseases of all kinds, with a focus on performing nipple-sparing and areola-sparing mastectomies with immediate reconstruction. She is also experienced in providing partial breast radiation.
Dr. Coomer’s additional passion for teaching drew her to serve for a number of years as an assistant clinical professor of surgery specializing in breast health and breast cancer surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She has also served as a medical contributor for Fox News Channel since 2009. Dr. Coomer is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.
