The pulmonary rehabilitation program at Texas Health Harris
Methodist Hospital Cleburne is designed to assist those suffering
from various chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD,
emphysema, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis, asthma and
other conditions. The primary objectives are education and
progressive exercise. With a physician's referral, the pulmonary
rehabilitation team can establish a personalized program to meet
an individual's specific needs and goals.
The inpatient program is designed for patients who are hospitalized. The
goal is patient instruction on proper breathing techniques,
administration of breathing medications and correct oxygen usage
with and without activity. Upon discharge, a referral for
outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation may be recommended.
Outpatient rehabilitation sessions are held twice
a week for eight to 12 weeks. The program combines education,
therapeutic exercises and functional activities. The
rehabilitation team assists patients with coping and
understanding the disease process, allowing the patients to once
again function independently.
The program is individualized to the patient with a focus on
improving the quality of life. Each session consists of education
and exercise lasting approximately one to two hours. Emphasis is
placed on providing a better understanding of the diseases
process, improving breathing and coughing techniques, symptom
monitoring, supervising exercise, smoking cessation and diet.
Once patients have successfully completed the outpatient
pulmonary rehabilitation portion, maintenance sessions are
recommended. The maintenance program is tailored to the needs of
the individual and meant to encourage healthy living. These
sessions are not covered by insurance. Referrals are required.
