Exercise and Breastfeeding

Are you reluctant to exercise because you’re nursing? Moderate exercise does not negatively affect breast milk.

Earlier research had suggested that exercise could suppress some important proteins present in breast milk. This led some experts to recommend that breast milk produced within the first hour after exercise be discarded. But new findings show that moderate exercise does not affect the proteins in breast milk and there’s no need to discard breast milk after moderate exercise.

If your exercise level is more than moderate, discuss nursing with your—or your baby’s—healthcare provider.
