When Do Babies First Smile?

There’s nothing quite so delightful as an infant’s first smile. It’s also an important development that usually occurs in the first month or 2 of life.

You might first catch a glimpse of your infant smiling in the early weeks of life while he or she is sleeping. This smile is more in response to some internal impulse than to social development.

By the end of the second month, though, your baby may flash his or her first “social” smile for you during awake time. Learn more about babies’ first smiles and what it means for you and your infant.
